Carrabelle

With a population of a mere 1,303 and an average water temperature of an inviting 72 degrees, the coastal community of Carrabelle is an ideal locale for escaping life's worries and napping beneath the sun. Carrabelle is a quiet little fishing village that welcomes visitors with its quaint charm and southern hospitality.

The village is best known nationally as the home of the world's smallest police station, which is located on the corner of CR67 and US 98. The station, better known as a small phone booth, has been a comical feature on The Today Show, Johnny Carson, Ripley's Believe It Or Not, Real People, and in the movie Tate's Hell. The booth became the police headquarters in 1963 when a local man noticed an officer getting rain drenched and informed the local telephone company who offered the local law enforcement officers a booth where they could make calls.

Other intriguing aspects of the area include the Crooked River Lighthouse, built in 1895 and located on Carrabelle Beach; and Camp Gordon Johnston Museum, which serves as a preservation of the amphibious soldier's heritage. Camp Gordon Johnston opened in 1942 for the sole purpose of training soldiers and their support groups-training over a quarter of a million men before closing in 1946. During WWII Carrabelle served as the focal point of social life for thousands of soldiers, and many artifacts from this era exist today in the museum. Another drawing feature of the village is Dog Island and the abundance of maritime history that lies beneath it. Dog Island, located off the coast of Carrabelle Beach and accessible only by boat or kayak, has produced evidence of human life on the island as early as 800 years ago. Many prehistoric archeological sites have been documented on the island, and the discovery of a 1200 year old dug out canoe attest to the forgotten traditions of prehistoric mariners. Legend has it that the island was used through the 17th and 18th centuries for illicit maritime traffic of smugglers and pirates!

Many investors have turned to Carrabelle for future investment opportunities and the volume of land purchases is steadily picking up. This waterfront community, like Port St. Joe, is about to transform from a sleepy fishing village into a mesmerizing waterfront community with amenities galore.
